Tooth and Company was a major beer-producer in New South Wales for 150 years, acquiring breweries and hotels throughout the state until it was taken over by Carlton and United Breweries in 1983. The company kept extensive records of their operations and these are held by the Noel Butlin Archives Centre. A complete list of the deposits is on the Archives database.

Records held by the Archives include correspondence from the 1840s, financial records such as share registers and ledgers, files of the General Manager, the Company Secretary, the Property Office, the City Manager and the Country Manager relating to hotels (including correspondence, valuations, leases, inventories, building plans and photographs), and various departments of the company, such as the Industrial Department and the Mineral Water Department. The collection also includes advertising material, staff records, brewing records, press cuttings, manuals, travellers’ ‘blue books’, interior photographs of some hotels, and records and photographs of the Tooths Brewery Band.

Records of the Mittagong Maltings, Castlemaine Brewery, Maitland Brewery, Blue Bow Aerated Waters and Cordials, Resch’s, Courage Breweries and the New South Wales Bottle Company are included, as well as minute books of other companies acquired by Tooth’s including Penfolds Wines Australia Ltd and Associated Foods Limited and subsidiaries.
